Cinco De Mayo

Today is Cinco de Mayo for any that have forgotten. We had a celebration at the school I attend, E.W.U. There was music food and face painting for the kids. When I was in highschool I learned about Cinco de Mayo. I was told the French intended to take over Mexico they had many more soldiers and better weapons the Mexicans were expected to lose horribly. Yet, there was a big storm on the ocean and the French were not prepared for it and so the Mexicans defeated the French and celebrated yet only temporarily. The French in a couples days time re-grouped and came back to defeat Mexico. This may not be very accurate but that is what I recover from years ago. My teacher says that in Mexico Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated. People in the United States seem to make a bigger deal out of it.

Yeah, when I lived in Mexico I don't recall anyone celebrating 5 de Mayo, or if they did, it was something very minor; not very memorable. Mexicans in the United States seems to make a much bigger deal of it. Of course, many Americans don't mind the opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture with great food and a little tequila....
